Thunderbird spins off
by Antony
In July, we mentioned Mozilla's move to depart Thunderbird. Mozilla Corporation announced the new development on spinning off Thunderbird yesterday.
Dr David Ascher will join Mozilla to establish a new company (currently referred to as MailCo) to focus on mail. Mozilla will provide US$3 million funding for this new company.
The move is identical to the one made by the umbrella Mozilla Foundation in 2005 when it created Mozilla Corp. to manage Firefox. "The new organization doesn't have a name yet, so I'll call it MailCo here," said Mozilla CEO Mitchell Baker on her blog Monday night. "Technically, it will be a wholly owned subsidiary of the Mozilla Foundation, just like the Mozilla Corporation."For more detail, please refer to Mozilla Launches Internet Mail and Communications Initiative (Mozilla press release, 17 Sept 2007), Thunderbird Flies: Mozilla Spins off E-mail Client (PC World, 18 Sept 2007).
Thanks to SillyDog701 member ncd for informing us about the development.
