Opera to use WebKit rendering engine

by Antony

Opera announced that Opera will be dropping it's in-house rendering engine, Presto, in favour of WebKit.

WebKit is a browser rendering engine, initially it was a fork of KHTML and KJS developed by KDE. WebKit project started by Apple in 2001, WebKit became open source in mid 2005. WebKit is the browser rendering engine used in well known browsers like Safari and Chrome.

To provide a leading browser on Android and iOS, this year Opera will make a gradual transition to the WebKit engine, as well as Chromium, for most of its upcoming versions of browsers for smartphones and computers.
